Two Day Etching and Printing Workshop with Royden Card

Workshop Description:

Do not miss the opportunity to learn the art of DryPoint Intaglio printmaking from Master Artist and printmaker,  Royden Card.  Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate with a pointed tool. These lines create a burr that holds ink and the print reveals the drawing. Intaglio printmaking is the opposite of relief printmaking as it is the positive marks that are printed rather than the areas that are left behind.  Beginning with a brief historical overview of this ancient craft, students will learn and practice each stage of the etching  process including

• Brief history of intaglio emphasizing drypoint with examples
• Plate preparation
• Paper types and preparation
• Inks, inking and wiping the plate
• proofing and printing on an etching press
• Editioning, curating of prints

This class will also serve as an opportunity to become certified and trained on the new MakeSpace printing press.

WORKSHOP FEE INCLUDES

• 1 copper plate
• 2 polycarbonate or plexiglass plates
• Etching needle
• Tarlatan ( for wiping plates )
• access to other tools, inks, solvents, gloves, press usage
• 2 sheets domestic etching paper
• 2 sheets BFK ( there will be other papers available for purchase )
• Blotting paper
• 1 sheet mylar for registration of plate to paper
• Protective gloves

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST

• apron
• sketch book
• pencils – pens
• ideas for images
• Gallon ziplock bags 2 or 3
• Viva paper towels or cotton rags
• old phone book OR pad of newsprint
• At least 2 file ( folders for carrying prints )
• Willingness to get hands very dirty ( there is no other way )
