Instructor: David Shevlino
When: March 15-18, 2023
Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: $600 (plus student contribution to the models)

David Shevlino is a master of capturing the human figure in an emotionally captivating way.  He generously shares his techniques and strategies with his students across the United States and Europe and we are excited to welcome him to Southern Utah!

In this workshop students will learn to simplify and interpret both the human figure and portrait as a series of basic shapes and planes described by light and shadow.  David will cover foundational concepts such as value, color, paint application and basic proportions of the head and figure.  In addition, students will learn some of the psychological aspects of learning to paint, such as giving ourselves permission to experiment and make mistakes so that we can learn and discover ways to become better, more creative artists.

This class will be particularly helpful for those oil painters who would like to expand from a tight painting style, to a more loose, economical paint application.  Often referred to as Alla Prima (or Wet into Wet) style of painting, David will cover techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to subjects.

Come prepared to practice, to learn, and to be stretched!

Workshop Schedule:

Day one – Introduction to Alla Prima Figure, Demonstration, and Application

On the morning of day one, David will do a painting demonstration from a partially draped in-studio model. After lunch, the class will paint from the model, individually guided and instructed by David.  He will discuss foundational concepts including figure drawing, value, color, paint application, proportions, and how to simplify the form. Students will be encouraged to ask questions throughout the day.

Day two – Continued Practice and Application

Students will paint in the morning and afternoon from a partially draped in-studio model. The pose will be different from day one allowing continued practice and application of the foundational concepts introduced on the first day of class.

Day three – Introduction to the Alla Prima Portrait, Demonstration, and Application

David will start the morning with a portrait demonstration. After lunch students will paint from the model. We’ll continue to discuss drawing, value, color and paint application. He will also discuss ideas specific to the portrait, such as proportions, placement of the features, landmarks, and more.

Day four – Continued Practice and Application

Students will paint the portrait from a different pose, practicing and exploring concepts learned on day three.

*Please note that this class is limited to eight students
